Dear Reader,

Hello and Welcome! My name is Abigail, and I'm so very glad you are here.

Can there be anything as awkward and uncertain as the first words of a new blog? To speak, and to (hopefully) be heard by perfect strangers is an incredibly odd feeling.
I've debated having a blog for over a year, but my fears have stopped me until now. Fears that no one will listen, or that I'll lose interest too soon. Fears that I could never measure up to all those glittery, perfectious Vintage and Period Drama blogs I already follow, that I won't have enough ideas, or even that all the good ideas are already taken.

I'm not going to say those fears are gone, but I have since decided that no matter how uncertain this adventure may be, it is one worth taking. I have read some amazing blogs and have longed to try it myself. So here we go: a humble approach at the art of blogging!

I am hoping to post a good mixture of books, movies, music, and all things vintage and old-fashioned. I love reading, music, history, and all lovely and pleasant things. These are the broadest of categories; I will definitely be filling you in!
Do you have any tips for starting/continuing a blog?
What do you wish you knew when you started blogging?
I can't wait to get to know you all, I hope we will all be good friends!
Sincerely Yours,
Abigail

  1. Yay! Lovely blog and first post, Abby!

Thank you so much for putting one of my buttons on your sidebar! :-) That's so sweet of you.

(If you haven't figured out how to put the pattern on the background of the entire length of the blog: You have to click "tile" at the Blogger Template Designer thing. Just saying. :-))

PS Am I your first follower? :-)

    1. Thanks Naomi! I hadn't realized just how exciting it was to receive a comment! :) And thank you for helping with the pattern! I have much to learn. Yes, you are the very first follower of Lavender Spring; thank you! :)

  2. Hi Abby and welcome!! :) Such lavender loveliness and a delightful design...! (And you have a picture from 'Magic of Ordinary Days'! That's such a sweet film. ;))

Hmmm. When I started blogging, I read that it's super useful to give yourself a consistent posting framework (i.e. deciding you'll post once a week, or every two weeks, or once a month -- whatever works for you -- and then just doing it consistently) and that tip's been super helpful. Also, readers love it when you can reply to comments. (I know I really appreciate it and tend to oftenest visit those blogs where the writers interact in the comments box. ;))

Another thing I've personally learned in the process is not to stress about it -- sometimes it can take a while to start feeling relaxed and really find 'your' voice -- and that's perfectly okay. :)

I'm looking forward to seeing what you share here and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

    1. Thank you, Heidi! I knew of the film that picture was from but still have to watch that; hopefully that's not a blogging faux pas!

Wow, that's great advice, thank you! I'll have to work on getting a consistent posting schedule, but I'll have no problem responding to comments! :)
      Merry Christmas to you too!

  4. Hello Abby! I found your blog through Emma's and thought I'd come check it out. It's lovely! I like your choice of background, and your header! Very nice job! :D

I can totally relate to your fears about starting a blog--publishing my first post was extremely scary. I've only been blogging since April so I'm still fairly new at it, and I must admit I struggle at times with the whole "measuring up to other blogs" thing, but I just have to remind myself that every blog is unique. My blog doesn't have to be a popular blog with tons of followers in order to be worth writing. Even if there's only one person out there who enjoys what I write and is encouraged and made happy by it, then it will still be worth it. I'm glad you decided to start a blog, Abby, because, despite the fears, it really is a lot of fun.

I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of things you chose to write about! :)

  6. Hi, Abby! It's taken me awhile to get over here for some reason, though I saw your comments about starting a blog in different places about the blogosphere :D

Anyway, welcome to the world of blogging! I know, starting a blog can be soooo discouraging at times, but here are just a few tips that I've leaned over the past two years (since you asked, dontcha know):

Have patience. Your blog WILL take off eventually, it just may take a while.

Comment! For some reason, when I first started blogging, I had a private blog, yet I was discouraged that people weren't commenting. Well, how on earth did I expect people to know about my blog if I didn't first comment on theirs?! Anywho. You already seem to be doing pretty well at that, so you're good ;)

Honestly, it looks like you're off to a GREAT start, Abby! That header is gorgeous (much better than my first one). I really like The Magic of Ordinary Days, and I LOVE the '08 S&S :D

This comment is rambling, isn't it? Anyway, welcome! I look forward to reading more posts! :D

    1. Hello Anna! Thank you so much for mentioning me on your blog! And thank you for following! I felt bad when I put The Magic of Ordinary Days on my header when I hadn't even seen it, so I got it from the library and will watch it soon. I am looking forward to making friends and enjoying the blogging world! :)
